Dump appeal 'Damn Cheek', say campaigners

FifeWest Action Group Press Release 20 November 2002
FifeWest Action Group (FWAG) have expressed their disgust and dismay at Alba Resource Recovery's appeal to the Scottish Executive over the firm's rejected plans for the former Westfield opencast site.

FWAG successfully fought off the attempt to turn the site into what would have been one of the largest dumps in Europe. The group has now vowed to contest the appeal.

FWAG spokesperson Lorna Bett:
"The compelling evidence of the lunacy of these proposals backed up by massive public support won Fife Council over. Common sense must now convince the Scottish Executive."

Objections to the proposals centred on the effects of 500,000 tonnes of waste on surrounding villages and waterways, air quality, wildlife. Doubts were also expressed about the 'over-ambitious' recycling rate claimed by Alba.

Fife Council's Environment and Development Committee also raised concerns over the Scottish Environmental Protection Agency's (SEPA) ability to enforce the 90 (NINETY) planning conditions attached to the proposal by planning officers.

Alba have asked for the basis of the appeal to be written submissions. It is thought, however, that because of the sheer volume of objections, and the strength of public feeling that the Scottish Executive will favour a public inquiry.

Lorna Bett:
"We've been preparing since September for the next battle with Alba. We'll step up a gear now that they've had the damn cheek to appeal."
